Twelve lawsuits were filed against video game developers and publishers this week in Texas federal district court, alleging patent infringement by incorporation of a patented method into popular video game releases.
The single plaintiff in all actions is the purported assignee of the sole patent at issue. Overly simplified, the patented technology is a method by which multiple users can simultaneously control and contribute to data displayed on a single, shared computer screen (through multiple input devices). Among the defendants are 505 Games Interactive, Inc. (Backbreaker), Riot Games, Inc. (League of Legends), Activision Blizzard Inc. (GoldenEye 007) and Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (Borderlands 2).
